13 Side Hustles to Make Extra Income When Working Full-Time

woman working at home office on computer - how to make extra income while working full-time

Balancing a full-time job while trying to earn some extra income might sound like a challenge, but here’s the good news—there are tons of exciting side hustles out there that you can start with minimal effort and in your spare time.

If you are like me, and are looking for a way to pay off those student loans, save for a big purchase, retire early, or just have some extra cash to splurge, then you may want to try out a few of these side hustle ideas. I have done a few of them myself, like blogging and creating online courses, and it has been a great boost to my income.

From passive income ideas to building up a small side business, these side hustle ideas can still fit into your lifestyle without taking up too much time.

1. Online Course

Creating an online course is a fantastic way to share your expertise on a particular subject while earning extra income. Whether you excel at digital marketing, cooking, crafting, or some other skill that people want to learn, there are plenty of online platforms like ThriveCart, Teachable, Kajabi, and more where you can design and sell your course.

The best part? Once it’s created, it can generate extra money passively while you’re busy with your regular job. If you’ve got knowledge to share, why not turn it into a profitable side hustle?

I personally use and love ThriveCart because of its high-converting sales pages and upsells. But, I especially love it because it does not have a monthly recurring fee, and instead has a single lifetime payment. So, very quickly, everything you sell becomes almost pure profit.

2. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to start building a side income, and is very popular among bloggers and other online entrepreneurs. You get paid by promoting products or services online and earn a commission for each sale made through your affiliate links.

You can work this side hustle right into your own schedule, making it one of the best options for busy moms, students, and full-time workers.

Social media platforms, blogs, and even YouTube channels are excellent ways to get started even if you don’t have an audience yet. I personally use my blog, but am starting to dabble a bit more with YouTube videos, and other platforms.

If you are interested in learning everything you need to know as an affiliate marketer, this is the course I took that helped me earn my first affiliate sales on Amazon, and later my first $387 commission from another program.

3. Blogging

Blogging can be an incredibly rewarding side hustle. Not only can you share your thoughts and passions with the world, but you can also make a nice income from it. One of my first big affiliate sales was for $378. That was for just 1 sale!

I won’t lie and say that blogging is easy, or that it is a get-rich-quick scheme. But what I will say is that blogging has been one of the most rewarding journeys I’ve ever taken, and it has also been one of the most flexible side hustles I’ve ever started.

As a blogger, you can monetize your blog through ads, sponsorships, affiliate marketing, digital courses or products, and more. This means you have the option of diversifying your passive income streams as a blogger, meaning more reliable income.

If you want to learn how to get started for free, you can check out my free 7-day blog course.

Or, if you need a more comprehensive guide that walks you through step-by-step, then you will want to join my new course, Blogging for Beginners. In the course I teach you everything you need to know from choosing the right web host and niche, setting up your site on WordPress, and more importantly, how to start monetizing your blog.

4. Virtual Assistant

Every successful business owner knows the value of their time. And, the most successful ones have virtual assistants, which means this is a job in high demand.

Tons of business owners and content creators are looking for help with tasks like scheduling, email management, social media, and more.

In a gig economy, it has become super easy to find jobs on sites like Fiverr and Upwork, but there are also Facebook groups dedicated to finding and offering work services.

And, if you need a flexible schedule, this is a great option to work around your full-time job because often times as a VA, the different tasks you’ll need to complete can be automated, or done on your own time. It’s also a good side hustle that can grow into a full-time income if you’re looking for more time freedom.

5. Online Surveys

If you’re looking for a low-effort way to bring in extra income, filling out online surveys might be a good place to start. Survey sites like Swagbucks and Survey Junkie won’t make you rich overnight, but they’re an easy way to earn gift cards or cash during your spare time.

You will only need your phone or computer to complete these surveys.

I’ve signed up for several of these survey sites, and after a while of working with each of them, I have figured out which ones are best.

  • User Interviews – This is a great site to find high-paying surveys and focus groups. You can earn up to $150 per hour for your time. (You can sign up through my link to start your first screening)
  • Survey Junkie – I love this site because of its user-friendly interface and the fact that you can cash out as soon as you reach $10 in earnings.
  • Swagbucks – Not only does this site offer paid surveys, but you can also get rewarded for watching videos, playing games, or shopping online. (I also take photos of my receipts)
  • Fetch – This app allows you to scan your receipts for cashback on certain items. It’s an easy way to make money while grocery shopping. (This one actually aired during the 2025 Super Bowl and they gave away $2 million to users)

These are just a few of the many legitimate survey sites out there, but be sure to do your research and read reviews before signing up. Some sites may not have a high pay rate or may even be scams.

Overall, completing online surveys can provide a quick and simple way to earn some extra cash in your free time. Plus, it can also be a fun way to discover new products and services you might actually enjoy.

6. Start a YouTube Channel

If you think you’ve got what it takes to be a content creator then starting a YouTube channel is one of the best ways to earn money while working on something you’re passionate about.

From unboxing videos to “how-to” tutorials, there are different ways to grow your audience and monetize through ads, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, selling your own products, and more.

My husband and I actually watch a few gamers online who create videos quite often, and we love their content. So, if you love playing video games, there’s even a way to monetize that with YouTube.

The best side hustle ideas are the ones where you get to express yourself, and creating videos might just be your ticket to turning your creative outlet into extra income.

I highly recommend using a Blue Yeti microphone as this offers some of the best quality sound recordings I’ve found. I have used this mic to create some YouTube and course videos of my own. It is also recommended by professional Podcasters like Amy Porterfield, who has over 33 million podcast downloads.

7. Voice actor

Voice acting might be the perfect side hustle idea for you if you love reading out loud, acting, presenting, or speaking in general. With the rise of audiobooks, podcasts, and online content creation, there is an increasing demand for unique and versatile voices. You can get started by creating a profile on websites like Voices.com or Fiverr, where clients can hire you for various voice-over projects.

It’s a fun and creative way to make some extra money while developing your vocal skills.

If you like reading, you can get paid to read by recording for audiobooks. And, if you are already creating content online, like as a blogger or YouTuber, you can repurpose your written or other video content into Podcast episodes.

Some of the best voice actors use a Blue Yeti microphone (which is also what I use for my digital course and YouTube videos). It is also the best recommended microphone used by Amy Porterfield, who is a very popular business and marketing podcaster, with over 33 million downloads.

Here is Amy’s latest podcast episodes if your interested in listening to one of those.

8. Podcasting

If you have a unique perspective around topics you love, or if you enjoy sharing helpful information to others, than a podcast may actually be a pretty good idea for you.

It’s an excellent way to share your knowledge, connect with like-minded individuals, and potentially make some extra income through affiliate marketing, sponsorships, and ads.

Plus, with the rise of platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts, it’s much easier to get your podcast out there and reach a wide audience. All you need is a microphone (professionals recommend this one), editing software, and something interesting to talk about.

Plus, you can bring on guests from other podcasts, and other platforms to help widen your audience and reach.

9. Real Estate

Investing in real estate could give you a good way to make serious money over time. If you’ve got extra space, putting it up on platforms like Airbnb is a great side hustle idea that can bring in additional income fast. And, it is a mostly passive method of income.

But, if you don’t want to invest a lot of time into real estate, you can get started in real estate investing through online marketplaces like Fundrise, which makes this hustle a lot more accessible to beginners.

10. Rent Out a Spare Room

Renting out a room can be one of the easiest ways to bring in extra income. Websites like Airbnb or Vrbo allow you to list your space for short-term stays without much effort. You set your own hours, determine the price, and wait for bookings to roll in.

It’s an excellent way to monetize your home while maintaining your regular job, especially since it may help you with paying off your mortgage or rent much sooner.

This can especially be a lucrative option if you live in a tourist-heavy or busy city.

11. Sell Digital Products

Selling digital products is an awesome way to make money with minimal upfront costs. Whether it’s custom templates, eBooks, online courses, or even unique digital art, there are tons of options to showcase your skills and start earning.

Platforms like Etsy, Gumroad, ThriveCart, and your own online store (like Shopify) make it simple to list your creations and sell directly to your audience. The best part is that once you’ve created your product, it can keep generating income for you, over and over again, passively.

Pretty cool, right?

If you want to get started for free, you can use digital design tools like Canva, and you can get your first 40 Etsy listings for free when you sign up through my linkie.

You can also create digital printables and sell those on repeat with Etsy or Shopify. I recently joined a digital course called E-Printables that teaches you everything you need to know to sell digital printables, and successfully list them on Etsy.

Some of the more successful students have already replaced their day job income just from selling printables on Etsy. So, if you want to learn how they did that, you can join this free workshop and start creating your first printable listing.

12. Freelance Writer

If you love writing, becoming a freelance writer can be a great option to bring in more income without interfering with your day job. Many companies, blogs, and websites are in constant need of blog posts, articles, or marketing content.

There’s a high demand for good writers, so your creative skills can turn into a profitable side hustle pretty quickly. You can pretty easily freelance on your own schedule, making this one of the more flexible side hustles.

Many pro bloggers also hire freelance writers to help them create more content in less time, so if you already do blogging in your free time, this can be a great place to make a few extra bucks too.

13. Graphic Designer

Got a knack for design? Graphic design is a fantastic side hustle for anyone with a creative brain, or artistic style. From logos to social media ads and more, there’s so much you can offer to potential clients like local businesses or entrepreneurs.

Platforms like Canva, which is what I use for my blog are all you need to get started. Plus, Canva is a free tool, so it doesn’t take any previous experience or training to get started as a graphic designer.

The other bonus to becoming a graphic designer is that there are many business owners out there who don’t have the time to create graphics for their business, so they have to hire someone to assist with that. A very common need for graphic design as a blogger is someone who can create Pinterest pins.

You can also join Facebook groups to find additional work as well. A great way to promote your services is to share your design portfolio on your own unique Facebook page.
